Set in the Cold War era, human guinea pigs are involuntarily recruited by the good folks of the Murkoff Corporation to test advanced methods of brainwashing and mind control. In a world of distrust, fear, and violence, your morals are challenged, your endurance is tested, and your sanity is crushed. All in the name of progress, science, and profit.
There are 25 trails in total, and they are completely replayable. You can find documents and notes back in the trails you have already conquered to uncover the disturbing truths of the Murkoff corporation. There are exactly 31 documents to find and over 80 rigs to unlock. The game also has many different endings, and it would be very fun to play it over a few times.
The enemy designs are very intimidating and make the game very intense, especially the stealth scenes. The reason I find this game enjoyable is the story. Not only does Outlast Trails have a good setting, but other Outlast games also have a very intriguing plot. After playing them, you will have a different view on horror games.
The cool thing about the Outlast trials is that you use goggles instead of the classic camera in other Outlast games to see in the dark. The night vision mechanic is used way more often in this game, so it’s really scary when it runs out of battery. You literally can’t see anything. The sheer terror of getting caught while you’re running away is terrifying because most of the enemies are faster than you. The only way to prevent being caught is to throw stuff at the enemies. The bigger the enemy, the shorter the stun is. When you are out of items to throw at the enemy, you will get caught and killed with a very gruesome death animation!
You don’t get killed with one hit every time, though. If you are lucky, you will get damaged and you can run away with a chance to live. All you need to do is get a lockpick, unlock an antidote station and heal yourself with a medicine.

The game is actually really hard in solo mode, but it is way scarier. The trails are very straightforward, and I think it is pretty cool how they are reasonable and make lots of sense. Don’t let snitches get away, punish children if they do something they aren’t supposed to, wd make the law fair and coherent. That’s probably what I like about the Outlast trials. They make what you are doing sound normal, but in real life, it is very inhumane.
The Outlast Trails is very convoluted, but it is a good game, and I highly recommend it to my horror-loving gamers.
