Viscera Cleanup Detail: Mopping Up Tragedy, One Bloodstain at a Time

Viscera Cleanup Detail is a game about cleaning. No, it’s not about cleaning wet floor stains and dirt marks, it’s about cleaning up the aftermath of abyssal horrors that can probably destroy everything you know and love, but that’s not important.

You are The Janitor a simple low-life commoner barely scraping by, you as The Janitor go onto planets and facilities to clean up the aftermath of a genocidal alien, on these “missions” you WILL be finding corpses scattered all around the facility in various states of dismemberment or disembowelment, sometimes the corpse is just a puddle of blood due to them being EVISCERATED.

Your only objective as The Janitor is to clean any and all mess, and yes, that does include that random can on the floor. PICK IT UP. If you do a good job, you get PROMOTED; if you do a bad job… well, let’s just say your family won’t be missing you.

Anyway, onto the actual review.

Viscera Cleanup Detail is a science fiction simulation video game where players are tasked to clean up the bloody aftermath of a successfully (or unsuccessfully) repelled alien invasion, zombie outbreak and other types of disasters. The game was developed and published by South Africa-based indie developer studio RuneStorm and was released on 4 April 2014 through Steam Early Access. The full release became available on 23 October 2015.

In Viscera Cleanup Detail, players are given the role of “Space-Station Janitors”, tasked with cleaning and repairing facilities that have been the scene of bloody battles during an alien invasion or another form of disaster. Tasks include gathering and disposing of debris, including dismembered bodies of aliens and humans, spent shell casings and broken glass; restocking of wall-mounted first aid kits; repairing bullet holes in walls; and cleaning blood splatter and soot marks from floors, walls and ceilings; as well as secondary bonus tasks. These include stacking items like crates and barrels in a designated stacking area and filing disaster reports on the events and deaths that took place on a corresponding level.

Viscera Cleanup Detail takes a unique spin on the genre of “cleaning games” instead of the usual boring “house to house” system, they take a unique approach and instead have various extremely well modelled and detailed maps, all of them are unique and take their own unique amount of time. On average it takes me 2-3 hours to completely clean, repair and dispose of various objects; on a map that has an average completion time of just over 2 and a half hours. The game is relaxing (if you don’t have a weak stomach) and fun. It is also quite accessible due to its many accessibility options, for example. Profanity filter, blood colour changing, colour blind modes (for all types), subtitles, different difficulties and simple controls.

RANCID FILTHY ROTLING.
